The New York Liberty reached this season a big victory; they got their first WNBA Championship Trophy in 2024. A Key moment and signifies that women’s basketball is growing. It has been a journey of hard work, dedication, and some great memories.
The New York Liberty faced the Minnesota Lynx in a thrilling Game 5 that will be remembered as one of the best WNBA Finals games ever. Both teams showed amazing skills, and the game went into double overtime. The Liberty won with a final score of 67-62, marking their place in history.
Game 5 was a comeback affair, as the Lynx jumped out to a nine-point lead after the first quarter, which grew to seven points by halftime. New York closed it all with a powerful third quarter, outscoring the Lynx 20-10.
After a tight, back-and-forth fourth quarter, Breanna Stewart made two free throws with 5 seconds left to knot the game. Then Minnesota could not score on its last chance in regulation.
The Liberty won the final period 7 to 2. They also caught a few lucky breaks late, like the blocking foul that sent Stewart to the free-throw line to tie the game in the fourth quarter, which was confirmed after review.
New York took 25 free throws, while the Lynx took only eight.
Jonquel Jones and Leonie Fiebich were key to the Liberty winning Game 5. Meanwhile, Nyara Sabally was also sharp, with Breanna Stewart and Sabrina Ionescu struggling on offense.
Stewart got 13 points by making 4 out of 15 shots in the final game. In the last playoffs, she made 3 out of 17 shots against the Aces in the final game.
In her fourth season, Ionescu did amazing things many times in the postseason. However, in the final game of the series, she scored only five points by making 1 out of 19 shots.
Jones proved to be quite a problem in the paint Sunday. She scored a team-high 17 points and six rebounds as well. Fiebich and Sabally added 13 each.
Jones, who averaged 17.8 points for each game in the series, was awarded Finals MVP.
Earlier in the series, one of Ionescu’s biggest shots was made during Liberty history. The 3-pointer shot occurred at the end of Game 3, and it turned out to be a winning shot that gave New York a 2-1 lead.
“I dreamed of this for a long time. You don’t feel as much as this,” Breanna Stewart said. “Thanks to Minnesota, they have made it tough to win a series. The fans have been wonderful everywhere we’ve played. To bring the first championship here in New York, ever in our history, is an amazing feeling. We’re going to keep celebrating with this city; it will be wild.”
