From Minneapolis to Hollywood: The Journey of Los Angeles Lakers

Founded in 1946 as Detroit Gems, Lakers later adopted the name ‘Minneapolis Lakers’ when there was a shift in ownership. Under the impressive leadership of George Mikan, alongside Jim Pollard and Herm Schaefer, Minneapolis ran away with the NBL Championship title of 1948. Nevertheless, winning a trophy did not guarantee that Minneapolis could maintain a consistent winning streak. Then it was during the summer of 1960 that Bob Short, the then-owner of the Lakers moved them to Los Angeles.

Then again, from here onwards to Hollywood came the Los Angeles Lakers and statistical figures attached to their players indicated mediocrity. In 1972, the “Los Angeles Lakers” won their first championship title under this name. Since then, the Lakers have won Championships 12 times, 19 conference titles, and 23 division titles. The outstanding outcomes of this basketball team over time have been brought forth by both distinguished athletes as well as coaches who were at the helm at some point or another throughout its history.

The Los Angeles jersey and logo also saw changes during this period, with colors and designs changing from city to city. They included black and white jerseys for Sunday matches or home matches.

Behind the Bench: Coaches Who Led the Lakers

The Los Angeles Lakers have a history of having the best coaches on their team. The Lakers have won various championships under these coaches, even multiple championships under the guidance of the same coach. John Kundla, Pat Riley, and Phil Jackson are some of the best coaches the Lakers had in their journey.

Presently, JJ Redick is the head coach of the Lakers. He has joined them in 2024. Nate McMillan and Bob Beyer assist Redick along with other assistant coaches.
