Phoenix Suns’ Achievements
The Phoenix Suns have not won an NBA Championship yet, though the team has posted many success stories over the years:
- Conference Championships: The Suns have won three Western Conference titles in 1976, 1993, and 2021. Each of those Finals runs had players who could be considered important to their mark on the NBA.
- Division Titles: The Suns have won seven Pacific Division titles. The last was in the 2021-22 season.
- Individual Honors: Throughout the years, many Suns players have won individual side awards in the form of MVPs, All-Star selections, and All-NBA Team nods. Two Suns have won the NBA MVP Award: Charles Barkley in 1993 and Steve Nash in 2005 and 2006. The team fared best when Nash won two consecutive MVPs during his mid-2000s tenure with the team.
- NBA Finals: The Suns almost won a title in 2021, with Chris Paul, Devin Booker, and Deandre Ayton leading the team. They played against the Milwaukee Bucks and went to six games in the Finals. Even though they did not win, it was one of the most exciting series in recent times.
Background: The Origins of the Phoenix Suns
The Phoenix Suns have an expansion team in the NBA in year 1968. Based in Phoenix, Arizona, they were the first major professional sporting team in the state. Although they were one of the younger teams, the Suns, for the most entering the league, quickly began to leave a mark within the West Conference by becoming a slowly strong team.
The Suns also had a historic moment in the 1975-76 season, just eight years since their inception. With the leadership of Paul Westphal and Alvan Adams, they reached the NBA Finals against the Boston Celtics. Even though they lost the series in six games, the Suns rebounded nicely and proved they were a force in the league. The 1976 Finals featured Game 5, a triple-overtime instant classic that is still remembered.
