NBA: Mavericks' Luka Dončić returns to in first practice since October 2

Head coach Jason Kidd said on Wednesday afternoon that Dončić did “really, really well” and is healing from a left calf bruise he got during team workouts at training camp.

Luka Dončić sat out Tuesday’s practice, and Wednesday and Thursday’s game against the Milwaukee Bucks is also somewhat unlikely, although Dončić did return to practice on Wednesday after missing two weeks.

There was an MRI report showing no major damage, and the Mavericks have advised a week’s rest for Doncic before he resumes playing.

Dallas plays its regular season schedule next week against the San Antonio Spurs on October 24. Should Dončić miss Thursday’s game when the Mavericks face Milwaukee, Thursday’s game against the Spurs will be the first time that Dallas will have had Doncic, Kyrie Irving, and Klay Thompson all playing together.

Thompson, 34, has been playing in some preseason games but hasn’t been loose and carrying around some tightness in his back. He has started to shoot poorly, including going 0-for-9 on Monday against the Clippers.

Thompson signed a three-year deal for $50 million in free agency. Coach Kidd believes he’s one of the key players, at least for this current Western Conference champion.

Luka Dončić is five-time First-Team All-NBA and at 25 is averaging 28.7 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 8.3 assists per game in 400 regular-season games.

In the 2023-24 season, he improved in scoring and scored 33.9 points per game, becoming the league leader. He got to his career-high assist average of 9.8 and averaged 9.2 rebounds per game. Though he sustained injuries, he participated in 22 playoff games, averaging 40.9 minutes, 28.9 points, 9.5 rebounds, and 8.1 assists.
