Washington Wizards Background
The Washington Wizards were originally established as the Chicago Packers in 1961, representing the launching of the first modern expansion team in the National Basketball Association (NBA). The team went through multiple name changes, originally known as the Chicago Zephyrs and eventually transforming into the Baltimore Bullets, which was later named Capital Bullets before finally adopting the nomenclature Washington Bullets in 1974. In 1997, the franchise officially decided to rename itself to Washington Wizards, thus hinting at its desire to break away from the connotations of violence associated with the term “Bullets.”
For all the years, the team earned the reputation of not giving up easily and staying put; yet the history of inconsistent performance against them. Indeed, there had always been streaks of brilliance in their shows, like 1978 winning them the NBA Championship; however, they would often fail to maintain consistency. Still, the Wizards have a faithful supporter base and are true to establishing a base to build future success.
Washington Wizards Logo, Jersey, and Branding
From its first design to the latest evolution, the Washington Wizards logo can be seen to demonstrate unity between the city and the nation’s capital. In the symbolic colors incorporated into the logo, red, white, and blue are found, including the elements of both the monument of Washington and a basketball, which symbolize the city and the game respectively.
With the change of design over the years, The Washington Wizards jersey has a change of design yet the version at present carries the colors that symbolize the country. Its home edition is mostly white with red and blue trim while the away jersey is mostly navy blue.
Washington Wizards Achievement
The most notable achievement for the Wizards was their 1978 NBA Championship victory, which concluded an epic seven-game series against the Seattle SuperSonics and thus established the most storied team in the franchise’s history with a core roster featuring Wes Unseld and Elvin Hayes. There were many other achievements, too:
- 4 Conference Headlines 1971, 1975, 1978, and 1979
- Seven Division Titles
- Many playoff appearances in the 1970s and resurgence in the 2000s partly due to Gilbert Arenas, John Wall, and Bradley Beal.
