On Thursday afternoon, President Biden hosted the 2024 NBA champions, the Boston Celtics, at the White House.
The White House was lit up in green on Thursday when President Joe Biden-in Secret Service parlance, “Celtic”-welcomed “Coach Joe Mazzulla” and the Boston Celtics to the South Lawn. They converged there to celebrate the team’s historic 18th NBA championship.
President Joe Biden received the Boston Celtics, who won the 2024 NBA title, at the White House in Washington, DC, on November 21, 2024. Among other things, he was spotted wearing a jersey as players Jayson Tatum and Derrick White flanked him at the ceremony on the South Lawn.
President Biden hosted the NBA’s 2024 champions at the Oval Office and, as is the custom, gave them a tour. The tradition goes back to Bill Russell’s visit in 1963 with his Celtics, who could be the most successful franchise in the league because they have won at least one championship in eight of the last 13 presidencies.
“The Celtics are not just a basketball team, they represent a way of life,” said Biden to the crowd. The visitor restated what Celtics leader Red Auerbach had said after receiving a No. 46 jersey from All-Star Jayson Tatum and guard Derrick White.
Biden mentioned that his Secret Service code name is “Celtic.”
“The president said, ‘I’m proud to be Irish. Everyone with me feels the same pride. This trophy is important to me. Congratulations to all the Celtics!’”
Biden, who was once the youngest senator in the history of US politics and now the oldest president in history, said that he felt a connection with Mazzulla as he guided the Celtics to a championship in his second season at 35.
President Joe Biden welcomed Wyc Grousbeck, governor of the Boston Celtics, who brought the Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy, as the 2024 NBA Champions Boston Celtics visit the South Lawn of the White House in Washington, DC on November 21, 2024.
After thrashing the Dallas Mavericks by a score of 106-88 in Game 5, the Celtics secured the NBA Championship. The win was their 18th championship. Hence, it keeps them ahead of the Los Angeles Lakers for the most titles in league history.
After their win, Biden posted his congratulations on the social media platform X.
“Congrats @celtics, the 2023-2024 NBA Champions and now the all-time NBA leader with 18 titles,” he wrote at the time. “A true legacy of excellence.”
