Background of the San Antonio Spurs: Origins and Early Struggles
The San Antonio Spurs originated as the Dallas Chaparrals in 1967 in the ABA. After struggling with performance and attendance, the team eventually relocated to San Antonio in 1973, where they assumed the moniker “Spurs” as a salute to the city’s cowboy heritage and Western tradition.
Over the years, the San Antonio Spurs logo has changed, but remained a clean and sharp design that portrays a strong team identity. Today, the stylized silver spur logo incorporated into the bold black and silver colors shows the internal grittiness and their relentless spirit as part of the team.
The San Antonio Spurs jersey is the most iconic in basketball. While recognizable as a uniform, it’s a classic design of black, silver, and white that embodies the no-nonsense, workmanlike approach to the game. And speaking of consistency, the Spurs’ jersey design has changed very little over the years. Two retired jerseys now hang in the rafters at AT&T Center: Tim Duncan’s No. 21 and Tony Parker’s No. 9.

- 2004–05: The Spurs swept the Detroit Pistons in seven games, to win their third championship. For the third time, Tim Duncan was named Finals MVP.
