Background of New Orleans Pelicans:
Established in 2002 under the name New Orleans Hornets, the original Charlotte Hornets franchise moved to Louisiana when the team first founded by George Shinn arrived. The subsequent years were very challenging time for the franchise, especially the destruction of the havoc wrecked by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, which forced the team to relocate temporarily for two seasons to Oklahoma City. The franchise was changed in 2013 to the New Orleans Pelicans, and herein their strength and spirit through the pelican are discovered to be more representative of Louisiana.
The team has undergone many changes, however most noticeably the loss of key players Chris Paul and Anthony Davis. Yet they have kept their spirits high and resolute while pondering their future and in the process are building a new roster that will feature more youth along with a strong core; hence, they are well prepared for the future in the NBA.
1) New Orleans Pelicans Logo
The New Orleans Pelicans logo is a stylized illustration of a pelican, well wide-spread wings; it is also shown holding the ball inside the mouth. This symbolizes the strength of the New Orleans Pelicans in trying times and in association with New Orleans. Generally, the branding of the team, bright-colored jerseys, and other logos and rest seem to represent the culture of the town. It somewhat depicts the pride and passion practiced by the locals.

The jersey is a significant portion of the New Orleans Pelicans’ team identity. Navy blue red and gold colors create an energetic feel to the jersey, epitomizing the vibrant New Orleans culture. Through the years, there have been several designs done, but the original ones are still the fans’ favorite. These jerseys give an emotional feeling to the players as they represent New Orleans City.
New Orleans Pelicans Achievements
The Pelicans still are not able to bring home the NBA championship, but they have brought some other wonderful successes within their rather short history:
Appearances in Playoffs
Since the formation of the team in 2002, the Pelicans have seen eight appearances during the playoffs. Their notable playoff runs came in the 2017-2018 season when they defeated Portland Trail Blazers in the first round of playoffs. They were defeated in the next round by the Golden State Warriors.
New Orleans Pelicans Coaching Staff
A winning team reflects upon the head coach and, more importantly, the coaching staff. The New Orleans Pelicans epitomize this aspect. As of the 2024-2025 season, Willie Green is in his third season as head coach, for which he has received praise for his interpersonal skills and the relationship that he carries with the players in addition to his focus on defense and team cohesion.
The Pelicans’ coaching staff is heavily invested in the team’s success with a focus on short-term performance as well as long-term player development.

The Pelicans don’t have players in the Basketball Hall of Fame yet because the team is relatively new. But some former Pelicans have a good chance of being inducted in the future.
- Chris Paul: He led the New Orleans Hornets in their early years to several appearances, earning them several All-Star selections. His leadership and play-making ability made him one of the best point guards in the history of the game, and he will most certainly enter the Hall of Fame someday.
- Anthony Davis: Davis played for seven seasons with the Pelicans and became one of the best big men in the league. His contributions to the team, such as multiple All-Star appearances and playoff runs, make him a likely Hall of Fame candidate once his playing days are over.
