Scotty Pippen Jr. who played quite well under a two-way contract with the Memphis Grizzlies last season, has earned himself a multi-year guaranteed deal with the team.
On Tuesday, Grizzlies officials finalized a long-term deal with Pippen’s representatives, Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul and agent Shy Saee.
Scottie Pippen Jr., son of NBA Hall of Famer Scottie Pippen, 23, had an impressive All-SEC career for Vanderbilt before going undrafted in 2022. In the 2022-23 season, he played in six games for the Los Angeles Lakers on a two-way deal, though he didn’t play much.
Pippen’s new contract means he will be the backup point guard for the Grizzlies, working behind Ja Morant.
The Lakers released him at the beginning of the 2023-24 season. Then, he joined the Grizzlies through a two-way contract in January. He played in 21 games for the team, starting 16 of them. He averaged 12.9 points, 4.7 assists, 3.2 rebounds, and 1.7 steals a game. His field goal percentage was 49.3% and that of three-pointers was 41.7% on 3.4 attempts a game.
His impressive performance and the fact that he was a flexible guard earned him a regular NBA contract with Memphis. Pippen is expected to help starters Ja Morant and Marcus Smart since Derrick Rose retired during the off-season, so he has a chance to have a bigger role.
The Grizzlies have one open roster spot left after signing Pippen.
