The Philadelphia 76er‘s latest signing suffered an injury in a preseason game against the Atlanta Hawks.
“I’m hopeful that everything will be okay, and I’m happy he’s back with us right away,” 76ers coach Nick Nurse said after the game in a relieved yet worried tone.
George, who signed a four-year free agent contract just a few days prior, suffered a leg injury while guarding Hawks player Jalen Johnson in his second preseason game with the 76ers. He was hurt in the second quarter when his left leg twisted awkwardly and bent peculiarly.
He soon walked out of the game and did not come back. The team concluded that George would not play the rest of the night in the second half.
“I felt my knee bend too far back, and right away I knew I should have it looked at. But to be honest, I’m not anxious about it,” George told The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Joel Embiid will not play in the remainder of the preseason. He’s going to keep working at getting in better shape and more active for the regular-season opener against the Milwaukee Bucks on Oct. 23. Last season, a left knee injury kept Embiid from playing in 39 games.
George inked a four-year, $212 million contract with the Sixers during the off-season after spending five years with the Los Angeles Clippers. The last several seasons have not been without issues with injuries for George who appeared in only 54 games in the 2020-21 season, just 31 games in the 2021-22 season, and only 56 games in the 2022-23 season.
Fortunately, George managed the leg injury last season and played in 74 games with 22.6 points, 5.2 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 1.5 steals per game. The 76ers expect the injury that George sustained on Monday to be minor, and he will be back for the regular season.
The Philadelphia 76ers had a lousy season at 47-35. They were eliminated in the first round by the New York Knicks in the playoffs. This summer, they’ve added George to join Embiid and Tyrese Maxey. The 76ers want to rise above their past issues and be competitive for a championship.
