Dallas Mavericks 120, Minnesota Timberwolves 114 in a thrilling rematch of the Western Conference finals last season. Kyrie Irving accounted for 16 of his 35 points in an important third quarter, as Luka Dončić finished with 24, nine assists, and eight rebounds, showing he was an all-around talent down the stretch.
Anthony Edwards scored 37. Of that total, 24 came in the first quarter; that is a record for Target Center. He displayed his shooting skills, scoring 7 of 13 from three-point range, but was not efficient at the free-throw line, converting only 6 of 12. Luka Donić had his share of highlights, too, including a 33-footer late in the fourth quarter that stretched the lead to eight points for his team. Still, he had a poor shooting night from three-point range, making just one of eight attempts.
P.J. Washington played a critical role in the game by scoring 17 points and grabbing eight rebounds. It was played on the eve of their last win as they outplayed Utah by 110-102 on their home court. Meanwhile, Luka Donćić wasn’t successful against the Jazz as he shot only 5 of 22 from the floor hit only 1 of 9 three-pointers, and scored 15 points at the end of the game.
Julius Randle did fantastic for the Timberwolves, scoring 20 points and adding seven rebounds with seven assists. The all-around skills served to energize the gameplay and push strategy on the court.
The Mavericks showed their resilience in the latest game when Luka Don\rić was slightly in a slump. He was replaced by Kyrie Irving, who put in a performance that made him stand out and, indeed, crucial for the Mavericks’ win. The Mavericks also showed great defense; they stole the ball 12 times in the game.
It also helped Minnesota that Anthony Edwards played tremendously in the first quarter but at times just lost his team’s entire flow overall and had 20 turnovers. The Golden State Warriors capitalized on those turnovers on the scoreboard 25 times.
Irving shot 6 of 8 from three-point range, which was the high point of the game. With just 2:31 remaining in the game, Irving nailed an enormous three-pointer, so well guarded by Randle at the top of the key, to help the team hold its lead after that closed the gap to within 109-107.
Edwards is shooting five or more 3-pointers in the first four games. It’s the longest such streak in Minnesota’s history. At some point Thursday night, the Mavericks will play host to the Houston Rockets. The Timberwolves are scheduled to play at the Denver Nuggets on Friday.
