Indiana Pacers Roster: Past and Present Stars

The most talented players in basketball history donned the jersey of the Indiana Pacers. A paucity of superstars on the Pacers’ roster as they soared way to playoff contention season after season. 

As of 2024-2025, the Indiana Pacers have their roster built on young hopeful talent and are building for the 

future while moving toward a new foundation core. Some of their key players are:

Key Players in Pacers History

  • Reggie Miller: One of the most famous players in Pacers history, Reggie Miller is a three-point master who performs well under pressure. He made big shots, especially when it mattered the most, and that’s why he is in the Basketball Hall of Fame.
  • Paul George: Drafted in 2010, George quickly became one of the NBA’s top two-way players. His ability to score from anywhere on the court and guard the other team’s best player made him a key figure in the Pacers’ runs to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2013 and 2014.
  • Jermaine O’Neal: Acquired in 2000, O’Neal became one of the power forwards in the league over his Pacer’s tenure. He was a six-time All-Star and helped Indiana through several postseason runs in the early 2000s.

  • Tyrese Haliburton: A new trading acquisition with the Sacramento Kings and an emerging point guard who embodies play-making and shooting ability.

  • Most Wins of the Year: The best season in Pacers’ history was 61-21 in the 2003-04 regular season when they secured the number-one seed for the Eastern Conference.

  • All-Time Leading Scorer: Reggie Miller is the team’s all-time leading scorer with 25,279 points during his 18-year tenure with the Pacers.

Background of the Indiana Pacers

In 1967, the Indiana Pacers became a founding member of the American Basketball Association (ABA). The team was named after the state’s rich history with the Indianapolis 500 auto race and harness racing pacers. Success wasn’t difficult to achieve, especially under the bold leadership of team owner Mel Simon. The Pacers won three ABA championships before the league merged with the NBA in 1976.

Early ABA Success

The Pacers thrived in the ABA, winning championships in 1970, 1972, and 1973, with great players like Mel Daniels, Roger Brown, and George McGinnis leading them. Their success spanned over a decade, making it one of the original flagship franchises of the ABA when that league merged into the NBA with four teams absorbed into the NBA.

Transition to the NBA

It took the Pacers a little while to get accustomed to the competition after entering the NBA in 1976. The team could not revive its ABA success and instead slowly built an excellent fan base. Nevertheless, the Pacers eventually became a consistent contender during the playoffs until the successful deep postseason runs in the 1990s and 2000s.

The Indiana Pacers’ logo changed many times over the years, but the clean professionalism it produces has been maintained. Essentially, it mirrors the identity of the team. The modern letter “P” with basketball reflects the dynamic and fast-paced playing style of the Pacers.

One of the most iconic jersey designs is the traditional blue and gold, harkening back to the state’s proud basketball history. Over time, the Pacers have donned quite a few alternate jerseys, with fans still going crazy over the hugely popular “Flo-Jo” jerseys from the 1990s.   • ABA Championships

The Pacers thrice won the ABA Championship titles in 1970, 1972, and 1973. Thus, it is one of the greatest ABA teams in history.

  • NBA Playoff Appearances

They have qualified for the NBA playoffs 27 times, with the major success being that of 2000 when they ended up in the NBA Finals only to get defeated by the Los Angeles Lakers.

  • Division Titles

The Pacers have won the Central Division nine times. Indeed, the team has especially dominated division titles since the years of the 1990s till the early 2000s.

Indiana Pacers Championships Aspirations

Although the Pacers have not yet won an NBA championship, their fans are optimistic about winning it because the franchise continues building and molding a strong team. Their closest season was during the 1999-2000 season when they made it to the NBA Finals.

Indiana Pacers Coaching Staff

This coaching staff is crucial to the success of the Pacers and, over time, the team has seen some of its legendary coaches.

As of the 2024-2025 season, Rick Carlisle was the team’s head coach. Carlisle has been NBA coach for years. He coached the Dallas Mavericks to an NBA title in 2011 and brought him back to Indiana -where he coached the Pacers from 2003 to 2007- to oversee the rebuilding of the team.

Carlisle is famous among the masses for his well-managed defense strategies and well-prepped young talents. The coaching staff of Pacers comprises:

Assistant Coach: Lloyd Pierce, Formerly Head Coach for the Atlanta Hawks, will provide much-needed defensive experience to the Pacers’ bench.

Indiana Pacers Hall of Famers

Several of the game’s most prolific players have donned the Indiana Pacers jersey, including several Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame members:

  • Reggie Miller: The most recognizable Pacers of all time, Miller is renowned for his clutch three-point shots and great playoff runs. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2012.
  • Chris Mullin: Despite gaining more recognition in Golden State Warriors, his period at Pacers  mattered as it led him to the Hall of Fame in 2011.
  • Mel Daniels: Mel Daniels was a dominant center during the Pacers’ ABA days. This basketballer was a two-time MVP and an integral player in the championship teams of the ABA. They finally honored him with their induction into the Hall of Fame in 2012.
